Fort DuPont State Park

About Fort DuPont State Park

Fort DuPont, named in honor of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, is located between the original Delaware City and the modern Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Along with two other forts of the Harbor Defenses of the Delaware, it defended the Delaware River and the water approach to Philadelphia from 1900 through 1942. The backbone of Fort DuPont’s coastal defense included its rifle, mortar and rapid-fire batteries that can still be seen today.

When you visit Fort DuPont State Park, you can:

  • Walk the Riverview Trail and see several of the Batteries. 
  • Explore the property and read the signs, explaing the history of the park as a military base from the Civi War through World War II. 
  • Access the boat launch and explore the Delaware River or have a quiet picnic.

The portion of the fort that is not in the State Park is currently being redeveloped by the Fort DuPont Redevelopment and Preservation Corporation.

Fun Facts

  • During World War II, Fort DuPont housed German prisoners of war.
  • Visitors can see ospreys dive for fish in the river during the summer months, a variety of waterfowl in winter, and bald eagles year-round.
