Wildlife Areas for Recreation

Looking for acres upon acres of land to recreate in?  Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area consists of four large land tracts totaling over 5,500 acres of wilderness near Townsend and the mouth of Delaware Bay.   

Blackbird Creek Reserve, a component of the the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve (DNERR), is located upstream from Delaware Route 9 at Taylors Bridge in Townsend, and includes trails, pavilion and a canoe/kayak launch. 

Together as a Discovery Zone they offer you plenty of options for enjoying the Bayshore, whether you’re looking for land or water recreation, hunting, or photographing beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Cedar Swamp Wildlife Area is a state wildlife area with much of its acreage a transgressive brackish marsh. It is part of the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion and is mainly popular with hunters and anglers.

The best location in Delaware to hear the elusive northern bobwhite quail, visitors can walk the roads to find a variety of birds in any season.  An accessible boat launch is available at Collins Beach inside of the wildlife area for launching your Delaware Bay adventure on the water.

The Blackbird Creek Reserve is on the Delaware Bayshore Byway and includes trails, pavilion and a canoe/kayak launch.  You have plenty of adventure options, including hiking several miles of trails through uplands and along the marsh, launching your canoe or kayak, birding, as well as nature and wildlife photography.  

The trails and canoe/kayak launch are open to the public from dawn until dusk 7 days a week and free of charge. Please take note of posted signs during hunting seasons which may result in closure of some areas.

At the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve you can also experience a variety of programs and learn about volunteer opportunities for the community, teachers, students, and families. The Reserve also supports ongoing research and monitoring, field studies, citizen monitoring programs, and training opportunities for coastal decision makers.

Limited hunting is allowed on the Blackbird Creek Reserve by permits issued by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Fun Facts

  • Travel approximately 2 miles south of Blackbird Creek on the Bayshore Byway, you’ll soon see Reedy Island Rear Range Lighthouse, built in 1910, on your left. 
  • Just past the Reedy Lighthouse you’ll see Taylor’s Bridge School. Built in 1923, it now serves as a community center.

Know Before You Go

  • A Conservation Access Pass is required for any registered motor vehicle that’s used to access State Wildlife Areas, which include the Milford Neck Wildlife Area, for hunting, bird-watching, photography and similar recreational activities.
  • Don't forget to pack bug spray!  It's natural to experience biting insects around wetlands, marshes and coastline.
