A quick detour off the Delaware Bayshore Byway leads you to the capital of Delaware – Dover. This is a place where casual dining, unique spots, lively events, and history come together to offer a you quaint and discovery-filled experience. Dover is home to great shopping, fine dining and many options for overnight stays and is a perfect place to stay a night if you are exploring the Byway.
Start at the First State Heritage Park – Delaware’s first urban park. Other sites in walking distance, including the Old State House, Legislative Hall, The Biggs Museum of American Art, the Delaware Public Archives, and Johnson Victrola Museum. Interpreters, clothed head-to-toe in Revolutionary garb, await to lead visitors in signature thematic walking tours, seasonal lantern-lit programs, craft workshops, and special events highlighting bygone eras. Free walking tours start at the John Bell House every hour from 10 am to 3 pm, Wednesdays through Saturdays.
In walking distance from the First State Heritage Park is a quaint shopping area. Meander around Green and Loockerman Streets downtown. Lined with historic Colonial and Victorian buildings, plus specialty book, candle and jewelry stores, it’s a great place to shop or sample the local fare at a neighborhood cafe or restaurant.
If you have an airplane or military enthusiast with you, check out the Air and Mobility Command Museum in a restored World War II hangar.
Dover is also home to a large hotel and casino including the historic Dover Downs harness racing facility. If you’re feeling lucky, swing by and try your luck in the casino, just take in a show, or stay the night in comfort.
Finally, a fun destination for the kids is the hand’s on Delaware Agricultural Museum, which features restored buildings and a museum with vintage farm equiment.
