Fowler Beach

About Fowler Beach

PARTIAL BEACH CLOSURE ALERT: Portions of Fowler Beach will close on March 1st for the 2024 shorebird beach-nesting and migration seasons.  More details here.

Fowler Beach, located in the heart of the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, is a nature preserve for shoreside flora and fauna.

The beach and adjacent wetlands have undergone a major habitat restoration project to maintain and protect an area rich with wildlife, including shorebirds and horseshoe crabs.

The beach is a horseshoe crab sanctuary, as spawning crabs cover the dunes in May and June when this area is relatively undisturbed due to annual closures to protect beach-nesting birds like piping plovers and least terns.

During late fall and winter, Fowler Beach is a photography hotspot, with prolific opportunities to see Delaware’s unique wildlife, stunning sunsets, and pristine landscapes. In addition to the beauty of the beach, activities like boating, fishing, golf, and paddling are offered in the surrounding area.

Logistics:
There is parking along Fowler Beach Road, subject to availability. Always follow the instructions of posted signs when parking.

Hours:
The beach closes for shorebird migration and beach-nesting birds from early spring to late summer. Always follow the instructions of posted signs and barriers for closed regions and check the US Fish & Wildlife Service page for Prime Hook for closures and other information.

Fun Facts

  • The beach’s barrier dune system was breached by heavy storms in 2015. Since then, the Refuge has restored the beach and returned the freshwater impounded wetlands back to their original condition as a tidal salt marsh.
  • The horseshoe crab is the official state animal of Delaware, as the Delaware Bay is the main spawning point for the creatures in the US.
  • During horseshoe crab spawning, never disturb the crabs unless the animal is flipped upside down. If you see an upside-down crab, please flip it back over. See this community-made music video from the Horseshoe Crab Sanctuary Program.

Know Before You Go

The beach may be closed for shorebird migration, horseshoe crab mating, and beach-nesting bird season during the spring and summer months. Don’t forget bug spray in the evenings! The shoreline may be cooler or breezier than surrounding areas, especially in winter.
